business centers. It is characterised by elegant 19th century buildings in Umbertine style and graceful villas set in little verdant sceneries. After a short pleasant walk you will reach the Vatican Museums, which are a must for everyone visiting Rome. Those museums boasts the greatest collection of antiques in the world, a collection of outstanding interest and diversity. The museums are housed in the buildings erected by the various Popes from the 13 century. The palace's estimated 1,400 rooms, chapels, and galleries contain nearly 8km of displays. In 1503 Julius II started to display a few classical work of art in the Belvedere Court; since then on, Popes continued and completed to gather and to select the greatest treasures of art. The collections are displayed in geographical and chronological order and cover ancient, modern and contemporary art works. One of the most famous part of the Apostolic Palace is certainly the Sixtine Chapel. The name come from Pope Sixtus IV which let it built between 1477 and 1481. From 1480 to 1483 the walls were decorated with frescoes by famous artists of Renaissance, such as Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio. After twenty years, in 1508 Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to decorate the ceiling. Today, after the restoration, Michelangelo’s original colours of the “Last Judgement” sparkle gloriously. surrounding the Apostolic palaces are in Italian style, to which are joined the French gardening austerity and lively bushes in English style. The area is also embellished by many fountains; for example the “Fontana del Sacramento e dell’Aquilone” by Vasanzio and “Fontana della Galera” by Carlo Maderno. Following the walls of the Vatican City southward you will come to the St Peter's Square, an impressing open palace begun by Bernini in 1656 and completed in 1667. The colonnades have been designed as two arcs of a circle like in a gesture of welcome extended to the pilgrims of the world. Bernini wanted to give an effect of surprise by enclosing the square through the colonnades so that the basilica was hidden to the view of the visitor until the entrance in the square. At the centre of the square stands an obelisk brought from Alexandria of Egypt in the 1st century under Caligola’s reign. The two fountains are attributed to Carlo Maderno and Bernini. The St Peter’s Square boasts the St Peter’s Basilica, the greatest church in the world. The church is composed by 450 statues, 500 columns, 50 altars and it has a capacity to hold 60.000 people. disappointed when they enter the sumptuously decorated basilica, whose interior contain 11 chapels, 45 altars, and precious works of art. The Michelangelo’s vast dome, affectionately called by the Romans “il cupolone”, gives unity to the interior of the basilica. From the B&B New Holiday House Roma you will easily reach by foot the bank of the Tiber. Walking along the riverbank you can admire the St Angel's Castle built by the Emperor Hadrian (117-138) as a mausoleum for himself and his successors. According to a legend during a procession led by Pope Gregory the Great in 590 to pray for the end of the plague, an angel appeared on the top of the mausoleum in the act of putting his sword back in its sheath, which gesture was interpreted as a divine sign of the end of the plague. In remembrance of the miracle, a chapel was built on the mausoleum and on top of the Castle was also placed a statue of the Archangel Michael. Since then, it has had many roles: part of Emperor Aurelian’s city wall, medieval citadel and prison, an apostolic residence. It is nowadays a museum. Cross the river and the other world famous attractions of the Eternal City are to hand: Campo de’ Fiori, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon… Many worth-visiting sights are to be found in the surroundings of the B&B New Holiday House Roma: just walk around and discover this beautiful city…
